Currently trending at #1 on Netflix, ‘Behind Her Eyes’ draws from erotic thrillers, hazy dramas, and toxic love triangles to portray a story that is simply not what it seems from start to finish. The series makes it no mystery that the audience is in for just that: a long thriller full of secrets and whodunits served on a silver platter and charred by a slow burn that is well worth it. Based on the best-selling novel of the same title by Sarah Pinborough, the six-episode TV adaptation toys with its viewers from beginning to end by inconveniently connecting its three main characters through a sticky, slimy, bound-to-go-wrong immersion into each other’s lives.

‘Behind Her Eyes’ is intense and gripping. The series hooks its viewers in by playing with the information it chooses to disclose about the lives of each individual in said love triangle that is between Louise (Simona Brown), David (Tom Bateman), and Adele (Eve Hewson). Imperfectly blended, the writing, tone, and development of the six episodes escalate to an uncomfortable point that leaves us feeling invaded and baffled. The show throws all those ingredients into a blender before violently taking the cap off and letting it all blow up in the face of Louise, the main protagonist, and ours. Shocking and unpredictable, the tension between the characters only grew more and more between episodes and made for an ultra climactic ending. Despite having seen something coming, the show does a great job at building suspense, mystery, and frustration at the fire that was bound to happen, but still carefully and chaotically hides away its major reveal from viewers. It purposely creates a puzzling narrative that successfully spews out a gasp-worthy conclusion in the end that ties it all together in an eerie and disturbing way for everybody involved.

The consequences one expects are to come out of what appears to be just another story of infidelity quickly grow into something much more sinister. If you’re like me, an avid horror fan that has simply been living for Jordan Peele’s reinvented version of the genre, then you will definitely enjoy this as this captivated and shook me just as much as Get Out and Us did. The story concocted a perfect recipe for madness, betrayal, and intrigue. This is the first time I could not see a plot twist coming and was off by more than a longshot. It made me feel silly at my more than obvious predictions and complaints. If the lessons of minding your business and how ugly jealousy can get were a series, this would be it. Netflix really got me with this one and I’m going to be thinking about it for a while. Check out the trailer for ‘Behind Her Eyes’ above!
